Is smoking part of your identity?

How old were you when you first started smoking (or maybe even vaping)?

According to ash.org.uk, the chances are that you started before the age of 18, quite possibly between the ages of 11-15. I was older than that, but I grew up in a household where my Dad smoked, and in the 70s, you could buy cigarettes for your Dad when he sent you to the shop.

I’ve always believed that confidence, self-esteem and assertiveness are the three magic ingredients for a happy life. They’re those things that really make you feel extra.

Anyone who has ever studied Psychology will be familiar with Abraham Maslow. Even those of you who haven’t will be familiar with the concepts he discussed, the basics of human needs. While his views are often seen as naive, and there are regular attempts by experts to debunk his views, TV adverts ram these concepts home when they say, “buy our products, they’ll keep you safe and warm, you’ll smell nicer, and you’ll have to beat the gender of your choice away with a big stick.” There’ll be no more rolling over in bed and just saying, “Nope.”

Panic Day; don’t panic!

Panic Day; don’t panic!

It’s Panic Day.

It really is. And I told my husband I’d forgotten to schedule a post for it, and he did a quick, sharp intake of breath, and looked all concerned. Piss taking bugger.

But the point of Panic Day is to recognise how bad it is for us, and that stress can knock years off your life; it’s a genuine reason to practice self care, and generally being a bit nicer to ourselves. In a world where we are constantly available and switched on, this seems impossible, but I’ve just had a radical idea. Put your phone down, in another room, and ignore it. You’ll be fine. *twitch*
